New interview
Posted by Cristelle on May 5, 2009
Here’s a shot new interview of Summer made at FedCon. She talks Terminator, the series she watches and upcoming work.
Sadly it’s in German, but here’s what I understood in short:
She speaks of the relation actor/writers on T:SCC and how things played out in season 2.
She watches Brothers & Sisters, 30 Rock (she was advised to watch this by her sisters and became quite a fan), Top Chef, Project Runaway and… American Idol.
And most importantly: she got a role in a new movie. She can’t say what it is for yet, though she realy wants to be in it. But she’s waiting to see if T:SCC season 3 will happen or not.

I would translate it, but the summary already covers all of the important informantion. And Americon Idol? Seriously? Fail! xD
And the whole cast of TSCC watches Project Runway and Top Chef… seriously, they should better be watching LOST, so they could learn something about good storytelling. ^^

Mal, we’re waiting your translation impatiently. Viktor is German too, he can translate it.
Thanks Mal

Tobi hast translated it already so i think there is no need to do it again.

I hope I don’t get flamed for this, but now I really hope that TSCC gets cancelled,… even more than I did before.
I hope she’ll be able to do the movie she wants to be in so bad, instead of wasting anymore time on that crappy show that doesn’t even give her enough screen time.
John said,
google translate the page. she said shes been offere a film role, here this is what it said, VT: One last question: What did you do before? In welchen neuen Projekten können wir Dich sehen? In what new projects we can you see?
SG: Gerade habe ich ein Angebot für eine Filmrolle bekommen. SG: Even I have an offer for a film role receive. Es ist ein Film, in dem ich unbedingt spielen möchte. It is a film in which I necessarily want to play. Ich würde noch nicht sagen, um welchen Film es sich handelt, bevor ich in zwei Wochen mehr Klarheit habe, denn wenn Terminator verlängert wird, dann kann ich die Rolle sowieso nicht annehmen. I would not yet say what the film is, before I put in two weeks have more clarity, because if the Terminator is extended, then I can not accept the role anyway. Aber ich las das Drehbuch und war absolut begeistert. But I read the script and was absolutely thrilled. Es ist jetzt schwer, einfach zu Meetings zu gehen und sich Sachen anzugucken, denn die erste Frage ist, ob unsere Serie abgesetzt wurde. It is difficult now, just to go to meetings and things anzugucken, because the first question is whether our series was discontinued. Aber ich muss auch die Möglichkeit in Betracht ziehen, dass es nicht weiter geht, und deswegen ist es für mich beruhigend, dass ich letzte Woche dieses Projekt entdeckt habe. But I must also give the possibility to consider, that it does not continue, and so it is reassuring to me that last week I discovered this project.
John said,
ok, it’s gone funny, it basically say she has been offered a film role, but she’s waiting 2 weeks, just in case terminator is renewed for a third season
case said,
I don’t think terminator is a crappy show at all. It’s gone through a slow patch and had a couple of reasonably irrelevant characters but there were probably about 8 REALLY good episodes and several other decent ones which isn’t bad for mainstream U.S television quite frankly.
I do think it’s about time for Summer to get cracking on a good movie career although I personally am looking forward to her portrayal of Allison this coming year .. I think she’d be great with that character where maybe they could even allow some of her real sweetness to bleed through like with parts of the character of River.
Interesting news about the movie. If she does it I REALLY hope it’s a great interesting movie and not something b-grade. She deserves better and if she doesn’t get it i’m gonna have to come to the U.S and kick her managements butts.

Well, i would rather see Summer in something new (that she really want to be part of) than in another season T:SCC that probably be cancelled halfway through, since i think the rating will not improve…
@James Bond: well at least YOU are having fun
Dapper Dan Man said,
@Uberangel
Amen, at least someone sees reason. I thought I’d be completely alone with my opinion.
Johnny said,
Unless there is a scheduling conflict, I don’t understand how she can say that she cannot take film roles.
Plenty of actors do film while doing shows — shows that involve far more of a time commitment than Summer’s role on SCC.
I too hope that SCC is canceled if purely for reasons involving her ability to take film roles…
case said,
I guess I wasn’t clear. I’d rather see her doing movies as well. Just good movies. I’d rather see another season of decent television than a string of poor movies quite frankly … part of the reason I like Summer is because she seems somewhat unique .. I don’t want to see her just become another part of the hollywood machine.
Uberangel said,
@case: i wouldn’t worry about that, i guess Summer wouldn’t be so eager to be in that ‘mysterious’ movie project if it would be some Michael Bay crap
Bauer said,
great interview, thanks
S.G wants to watch GERMANY IDOL ? That’s the biggest cr.p on German TV ! Nobody on this show can sing, its just for stupid Entertainment. (German Summer Glau fans will agree with me ?

I don’t think we have to live in fear of another Mammoth or Initiation of Sarah. TSCC and the recent photoshoot created a lot of media attention towards her. I’m sure she’ll be able to get good roles in the future.
I still don’t think TSCC is a decent show though. It’s a mess of wasted potential with maybe three decent episodes and only one that’s really good.
case said,
I have to say I at least have enjoyed the attempt made of that show to have a degree of depth and seriousness about it rather than the dumbassery that was T3. I do realise it’s a show about robots from the future but there’s are some themes in it that can be taken more seriously and I think the show was an attempt to explore them .. if a little ploddingly. I definately think Firefly was a vastly superior show but i’ve been disappointed in Joss’s work since as well. Dollhouse really isn’t all that.
Frank said,
I wonder………would she turn down a Serenity sequel to continue Terminator?………Nah
case said,
@Frank
heck no
Dapper Dan Man said,
@case
Everything is better than T3
I agree on that. Yes, Friedman is certainly ambitious and tries to be deep and artsy but IMHO he fails miserably. The result is a pretentious crapfest. You also don’t have to neglect the action aspect just because you want to make a character driven show. Those things aren’t mutually exclusive.
Firefly is a great example of how to do it right. As for Dollhouse, I really hated the first five episodes but the show has really picked up the pace since then and is starting to grow on me. I still can’t stand Dushku though, she’s a terrible actress and the show really suffers from her being the lead.
Dapper Dan Man said,
I also hope that The Serving Girl gets made some time soon. I want that movie so freaking bad.
case said,
Yeah .. i’m really not a fan of Dushku either. Bad call on Joss’s part .. i’ve also been disappointed in the dialogue to be honest .. there’s been some clunky writing in that show.
case said,
The Serving Girl could be something really special.
Dapper Dan Man said,
LOL dialogue… yeah, but if you’re honest with yourself and take off the nostalgia goggles, you’ll see that Joss’s dialogue always had the tendency to be a bit… eh, comical at best and cringe worthy at lesser times. He just has to make everything snappy, sometimes that doesn’t work too well.

The thing is that TSCC has all the ingredients to make an awesome TV show. Some great action(when they choose to), an interesting plot, and good character development. As simple as it sounds, very few shows OR movies can get that. I was doubtful that TSCC could pull all of its potential togeather until the season finale, where I was convinced.
Also, I would say that 85% of movies that are made are bad. Even thought Summer liked the movie she’s concidering and it would have a better chance of success with her in it, I would still rather something that I know can be great than a movie that I know nothing about.
case said,
It worked great on Firefly because the tone was so escapist and sort of vivid I guess you’d say. I don’t think he’s used to trying to write something as serious in tone as Dollhouse tries to be and it really shows.
Dapper Dan Man said,
@case
Yep, on Firefly it worked for the most part.
@Modano
I disagree. The action scenes are very sloppy and FULL of inconsistencies, really, really full of them. The plot isn’t interesting, it’s full of plot holes and leaves a lot to be explained. That makes you wonder what the hell is going on but it’s not good writing. Just because the show makes you think doesn’t mean it’s thoughtful. The plot isn’t interesting, it’s contrived and convoluted. And what character development?… what character developed and in what way? I really want to know.
Sure, lots of movies are bad but I’d rather take my chances with a new project than being forced to suffer through another season of TSCC. The only reason for me to watch that show is Summer
case said,
@ Dapper Dan Man
I’ll say 2 more things in defence of Terminator:
1. Summer has gotten some pretty funny lines and she’s great at deadpan humour.
2. I really liked John Henry .. even if he was just sitting around playing with stuff I found him compelling and I really like Garrett as an actor.
Other than that I guess you’re pretty spot on. The worst thing about the show for me has been how elements were introduced to add a different perspective but just dragged on and on for really no good reason.
Dapper Dan Man said,
Summer is just an overall great actress. She said she doesn’t like doing comedy but I think that’s just her insecurity speaking. I would love to see her in a British comedy with lots of dark and deadpan humor, that’d be pure bliss.
I’d also love to see her in a good, over the top American comedy. With her range of facial expressions, she’d make Jim Carrey look like an amateur

Joss likes of Summer Glau. Autonomy could be the magic word, to produce a River II in Dollhouse.

Dollhouse is designed for a specific segment.
The girls will enjoy Dollhouse.

I concede most of the stuf about the action; I wouldnt say that it is as bad as you say though, there have been some good scenes but bad ones as well. But really? You dont think the plot is interesting? I had been wondering what Weaver and JH were up to the whole season and the Riley/Jesse stuf was really interesting. I also thought the future scenes were great and the last episode brought the plot to a whole new level. Gratned, there were some dull moments, the worst being that crazy 3 dot rampage Sarah went on.
There is so much character development its rediculous. The John/Cam development is probably the most prominent, coinciding with John strugling between Riley and Cam. Savanah and JH were great togeather and really interesting to watch the interactions bewtween the two. There is also Sarah strugling with knowing she’ll die of cancer, and all kinds of Derek/Jesse tension. Also, probably the biggest but most overlooked development, is John the whiny teenager starting to become John Connor.
case said,
I think the setup for the 3rd season has great potential. I have to be honest, as much as I think Summer has done a great job portraying Cameron and she’s had some entertaining action scenes and some very funny moments, I’d much rather see more of the Allison character. I’ve never quite been able to form the attachment to Cameraon that many people seem to .. I mean .. anything cute or likeable about the character pretty much stems from the fact that the person playing her is just plain adorable. Give her a real person to play in a tense dramatic situation like the terminator future and you’ve got a recipe for something pretty damn cool. I can also see John Connor finally coming into his own in this next year. Give the boy a big gun and let him blast some robots already.
case said,
and fyi .. Jameron is just creepy people.

@Modano
No, I really don’t think the plot is interesting. I thought it was blatantly obvious what Weaver was doing as soon as she hired Ellison, I can’t imagine how that could not have been clear to you. The Jesse/Riley sub plot was painful to watch IMO, this was partly due to both actresses, who are just plain annoying but also due to the repetitive nature of their interactions. The future scenes looked like a bad b-movie run through every colour filter currently available. Alpine Fields was just pointless. The submarine episodes suffered from huge plot inconsistencies and the other scenes were so forgettable that I don’t even remember them.
Where is the character development between Cam and John? They don’t really grow or change. What new things do we learn about them? What new insights do we gain? John doesn’t react any different because of a change in his character. Every action is based on some immediate cause, the basic status quo between them doesn’t really ever change. There’s a deeply rooted trust for her but he’s still always second guessing her. In front of others he defends her but to her face he’s cold. Nothing’s changed about that.
Also, it’s not character development if a character is struggling but we don’t learn anything new from it. Struggling, tension,… etc. that’s all not good character development, if it leads to nothing. John’s still crying his guts out in his mommy’s lap, Sarah already followed a crazy dream in the pilot, Jesse’s always been a bitch and Derek’s always been a bit dense… NOTHING changed and we know nothing new about them except for some factual information. I’m sorry but for all the time Friedman has taken to “develop” his characters, they are all underdeveloped.
They are interesting characters, sure, but they were interesting before TSCC came along. Friedman didn’t invent them, at least not the interesting ones. And before you say it, Glau made Cameron. She’s not Friedman’s creation, it’s basically Arnold’s character from T2 in female form, made insanely intriguing by Summer Glau.
And that’s all there is to Friedman, he’s laying out bait without the intention of delivering and I ain’t biting! He was asked in an interview if he’s tempted to fill up the finale with cliffhangers,.. he answered that he’d never do that and that he’ll answer all questions and just raise a tiny few new ones…
L-O-L
If you can think of any way to implement more cliffhangers into the finale, please tell me because I surely don’t. I have lost any respect I ever had for the guy after I watched that finale, not that there’s been much to begin with though.

Uberangel said,
@Bauer: Agreed GermanIdol is terrible…they should hire Simon Cowell for a season
@DapperDan: Yes, i would like to see Summer in some sort of British Comedy like “Coupling”
I think the problem with T:SCC was that producer Josh Friedman didn’t see it as an action series – as he admited – but a family drama about cancer
Dapper Dan Man said,
@Uberangel
I was actually thinking movies. I really hope she doesn’t do another TV show. Summer belongs on the big screen.

Oh, I haven’t commented on Summer’s latest interview! How could I!
I really wish Serving Girl gets made. Sure, it’s not some huge mega-budget movie, but Joss has always written amazing stuff for Summer, discovering her best talents and abilities.
When I watch Dollhouse, it’s great and all, but I feel like something’s missing. Maybe Joss needed Summer to play in his show to make it even better?..
Anyway, I also wouldn’t mind Summer portraying Allison, I think it’s more challenging role than Cameron and she could play emotions more often than once in 22 episodes.
