I had a Texas Instruments 99 4A home computer in the very early 80s. I had to save information on it via a cassette recorder and the console had to be plugged into a standard television. One file with about 20 names/phone numbers took several minutes to save.

Not long thereafter, I saved up enough allowance to upgrade to a Commodore 64. For a boy in the 10-15 age group, a C64 was paradise. Games such as Commando, Racing Destruction Set, Defender of the Crown, Pirates, Silent Service, and Summer Games I and II, along with Winter Games ruled my household. I also loved having friends over to play Gauntlet for hours on end.

Once the 90s hit it was again time to upgrade. My first true PC was an 8088 machine, which was quickly followed by a 286 that had VGA graphics. I bought a game for it called Mech Warrior, and when I found out it required 100 meg of hard drive space, I about went nuts. My friend and I still laugh about that today.

One of the things about owning a computer back in the late 80s/early 90s was that users had to notch their 5 and 1/4 inch floppy disks so the drive could read the disk on both sides. I saved the disk notcher as a memento and might sell it to the Smithsonian some day. :P 3 and 1/2 inch disks came out and then CDs were used as well which made things much easier.

Looking back, I'd have to say my all-time favorite Retro game was probably Tetris or either King's Quest or Space Quest - some of the first quasi-RPGs. I'm not sure when Baldur's Gate came out, but I loved that as well.

Great topic - this brought back some nice memories.

I didnt spend a lot of time on computors in the 90's and wasnt even alive in the 80's but two diffrent games came to my head :)

Computer:
Developed by Cyros Atlantis - the lost tales (1997) 3d game, you click on screen to walk between areas, and it animates between them, an adventure game about a guy saving the queen and whole atlantis, lots off brainy stuff and i guess "action" for it's time, but idk, more of a puzzle/solving stuff kind of game. I rememberd watching my dad play it, he got it along with the first tombraider game.

Nintendo 64:
Super smash bros (1999), I loved it but my friend who owned the N64 didnt so I didnt get to play it alot back then, but we play it from time to time on emulators in school :P

The computer games consoles that i owned in the 80s were:

Sega Master System

Image

I got this console when i was about 3 to 4 years of age and i have still got it to this day i think it was realesed in 1986, then was discontinued in 1992 when sega developed there second console witch i will be describing later.

My very fist game i owned was Golden Axe Warriror it was based on Zelda the orginal version you had to go around 9 palaces in the kingdom of Firewoond. You had to collect 9 crystals to get to Death Adder dungeon to obtain the Golden Axe to defeat him but it wasnt eaisy i got my ass kicked a few times buy the end of Labyrinth bosses.

My second Console i owned in the 80s where a Sega Mega Drive also know in the Usa as The Sega Genisis this was the start of the 16 bit area you will knotice the difference of the videos that i find on youtube of the game to see the difference of the ones above is 8bit and the one below is 16 bit.

The Full Game walkthrought for you guys to see the best ever shinobi game that was launched in the 80s.

Sonic the headhog Playthrought.

I have played this game alot its very hard and techinical i dont have my mega drive now but i miss playing my mega drive so i installed a genisis emulator to my Laptop to play the games that i used to paly on my mega drive when i was about 8 years of age with was briliant loved the 16 bit era miss them golden days of gameing. 8-)

I will be back with more of my Retro Game Knowledge and some of my Gameing Memorys of the Retro Game Era.

Really awesome games were all the Lucas Arts games.
Among then especially the Monkey Island series, Indiana Jones ,The Dig , Sam and Max ...
Also great was "beneath a steel sky".
The 8 and 16 Bit was Nintendo's best time. Castlevania, Super Ghost and Gouls, R-Type, Starwing, F-Zero, all the Zelda titles, Plok, Super Mario, Chrono Trigger, Mega Man and many more.

Norman,
Do you remember if Castlevania could be played with two players as a team? I think I played it at a neighbor's house as I didn't have a Nintendo.

I'm 30. I grew up in Hong Kong playing Famicon (NES) and Super Famicon (SNES) in the late 1980's. After moving to Australia and beginning high school I slowly stopped playing video games for many years. With a job and income, I got back into video games a few years ago with Nintendo DS then PSP because of their portability. Now I have the modern consoles too, but no time to play them.

There were too many favourite games from the 8 and 16 bit years for me to mention. I have downloaded many classic Nintendo titles to the Wii like mad. All the classic Mario, Zelda and Metriod titles still shine and are still charming and a lot of fun to play. I love many JRPGs too like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy (the 8 and 16 bit ones), but can only understand and play the English versions.
