Its not a private forum and anyone can see what you post here, So I recommend not to copy it here if its too personal.

When the poll is over we can discuss the final dates, who is going to print and who is going to send the final result.

By the way, I went yesterday to a professional photo printer, my first guess to actually produce the booklet from digital images. What I got is: 20x20 cm, 20 or 35 pages, up to 30x30 cm 24 pages, glossy paper, from 25€ to 45€. Maybe it's not OK, nor sufficient in terms of number of pages. That's a start, I'll continue to search.

That's for photos, I thought we wanted to make a printed book, not separate images put together (technically one could rasterize each book page and then get it printed as a photo).

45 € would be a realistic price. Since we have web 2.0 here there are also a lot of online printing shops and there you can save money. Most of them accept .pdf .doc and .ppt (PowerPoint)

I also know that a lot of shops have a minimum edition of 25 or more copies and of course we only need 1 copy.

Ah im to be relieved thx for explaining nyrki ^^ But how many pages did we need for ??

You're welcome. The number of pages will depend on how many persons will participate and how many pages per participant.

You're right, this is why is mentionned it is possible it could not fit. It was my simplest, initial idea, see what it could mean.
Can precise your thought? member's production will be separate pages, won't they? And what do you mean by rasterize? It seems to me you know something in this area. Maybe you have an idea?

The shops I know all accept at least the .doc and .pdf format.
So everyone creates his pages and save it in one of the formats (I guess that .pdf would be the best) and It will be send either online or directly to the shop.

Of course we have to decide if we want to use hardcover or softcover or other types of book cover. What type of paper we want to use like glossy.

have someone find a way to print in A5 format ?

plus, there's a big problem for me, i'm unable to find what to take picture in my town (it's too small ;) )

Hello Copper. For our book, you normally don't need to print. You can create a A5-size document if you can use MS Word or OpenOffice.

If your town is too small, mybe you can extend to the biggest town in the area. Every region of France has neat places. And make you imagination work. Just think of Summer when she will read your lines... It's a powerful encouragement, isn't it?

With separate pages I meant the physical paper, that one would get them as normal photos on paper and not as a booklet. But perhaps today the photo shops makes booklets also from photos.

Wikipedia says this:
Quote:
Rasterization or Rasterisation is the task of taking an image described in a vector graphics format (shapes) and converting it into a raster image (pixels or dots) for output on a video display or printer, or for storage in a bitmap file format.

Of course everything is rasterized before getting out on paper but the difference is that to a photo shop you send an raster image (like a JPEG file) that would be scaled to fit the paper. The process could be like taking a print-screen of the text in MS Word (or whatever) and then cutting the edges of in some image editor etc. A lot of manual labor and will probably not be so good. If the image is very small (like on the computer screen) it would probably make the font a bit blurry.

The idea Norman and I seem to have is that everyone makes their own PDF files and they are combined into one file before going to shop print shop. Then nearly everything (font, layout etc.) is stored in its natural vector format (except inserted high-resolution photos of course) and a total control of the output is obtained.

We could even make it so that we create a template for MS Word/Open Office Writer with a colored page header that should contain e.g. name of author and page number. It will create a little bit of uniform look of the booklet but the rest of the layout of each page I feel should be up to each member to create some elaborate style (perhaps with a few tips if requested).

I googled and found this service:
http://www.blurb.com/make/pdf_to_book

They do PDF to book but they do not use A-format standard paper sizes.
http://www.blurb.com/create/book/pricing
I guess A5ers in the poll would be satisfied with "Square" and A4ers with the "Standard" (possible landscape).

One needed to create an account to be able to see the exact specifications for the PDF and I don't have time for that today (gotta hit the sack now) but shouldn't be to hard to conform with their standard. In MS Word one can set the page size in centimeters manually (guess OO.org writer supports that too but don't have it installed here to check).

Yes, the shop I visited can make booklets from a series of pictures. The actual size of the booklet would give a minimum image resolution. But I agree the PDF solution allows to control easier this problem.

Thank you for explaining, Aqualize ;-)
Using PDF would help, I agree. But let's be careful. PDF files are not always self-contained. Sometimes they rely on the system, for fonts for example. So the rendering is different, once on the printer machine. Beside this and access of everyone to PDF production (not obvious to get good PDF printers), I agree that PDF probably offers the best potential for professional quality.
I really like your idea of a template to standardize to whole. I was thinking about something in the same direction.
I will continue to search for companies that accept to print one-shot (or really small series) professional quality from PDF documents. Beside, I will try to produce A5 PDF files. Never tried before.
