That's because Fußball is the origin of foosball. It's a transliteration to make it easier for a non-German to pronounce.

But foosball has a total different meaning than the german word "Fußball".
Foosball is in german, soccer on a table ("Tisch Fußball").

Like Mal mentioned, there came new rules a few years ago.
The rules say that "ß" is used in words with a long spoken vocal before it. Is the vocal short spoken then it's "ss".
But it's only important when you have kids who are going to school. They have to learn it. We can write it like we want. Both ways are kinda right.

This is a great idea. I mean I get confused with grammar all the time. Like my native language is Dutch but even there I make lots of mistakes. But then over the past 15 years they changed so many rules nobody really know how to write stuff anymore. And I guess its the same in Germany and many other places too.

Been there  Here people fuck up their own language all the time, in actuality most of them don't speak italian at all. I mean they use derivative languages, dialects. Some dialects are close to the mother tongue others are really really far, a sort of Klingon.
Since I was child I've really loved grammar and lexicon. Actually It was rather unpleasant when I used to point out every grammatical error while talking to people, later I figured out how pointless it was, language is made by people and as long as they understand each other it's nonsensical to be bound by some restrictive fixed rules.
I'm also fascinated by how English embraces both Germanic languages and Latin.. Take the verb "to vend" for example in italian it translates to "vendere" that means "to sell". Further it's interesting to observe the way the average italian pronounces the word "break" I've paid attention to this, everyone says /brek/.

And "vendre" in french. :D

Don't forget close links between french and english also, which is normal because of latin roots in common. :D

No, this means: "We are Klingons!"

You must know, the klingon language is the first officially recognized fictive language. It's a real language with own grammar and several dictionaries.
